I’m planning to cross off Wyoming and Montana this summer. Hawaii, Alaska, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are high on the list, but who knows when I’ll get there.

My world map is looking pretty pitiful, though. I need to work on that.

I’m only missing Alaska and North Dakota. It helped my dad was a truck driver when I was a kid (went with him during the summers). My world is depressing, though. Only Canada, Mexico, UAE, and Germany if you count a layover. I’m adding a few Asian countries in a week and a half though!

I’ll be in Hawaii soon so I’ll cross it off your list for you :P

Hawaii is hard one, you’ll need to visit all the major four islands for it to count. If you want to get extra points you’ll need two more. If you want to get full points you’ll need to trespass to get to the final two. After that you’ll have to defeat the demi-god Maui to return home . Good luck!

We used to joke that it would have been a great place to visit but it was a shitty place to live. It had the white sand beaches and palm trees but the isolation, especially in the pre-internet days, and lack of fresh food sucked. It didn’t help that the whole island was a military base so you couldn’t get away. There was a lot of drinking on that island even compared to other Navy bases.

I’ll just share this quote again, because I like it a lot. It still feels very applicable.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It

I’m really not sure. I want to go everywhere but I usually travel alone so I may start with one of the REI organized trips until I’m more experienced outside of the US. I tried an extended weekend in Puerto Rico when I was there for work and pretty much nothing went as planned (I was supposed to camp, the place decided to close early and wouldn’t let me in, then I got horribly lost, had some food ordering nightmares, you name it) . I eventually just caved and ended up at a resort drinking cocktails on the beach, which was fine enough but not the intent of the trip!

I’ve been to Rome twice, once in the summer of 2001, and right before Christmas in 2010. The second trip was great, it snowed! It was the first time it had snowed there since like the 70's or something. We were on a tour of the Colosseium when the white stuff started coming down, and our tour guide started FREAKING OUT. He was like I need to call my boss, we might end the tour early, etc. As we walked around we just heard car horns, tires skidding, and car crashes CONSTANTLY for the rest of the day . It was insane!

Crete would be fun to check out.  My sister went to Malta recently and loved it.

It’s even better in real life ... these guys are nuts.

The atmosphere on the island is bonkers too, the ferries spit hords of motorcyclists coming from all over Europe, non stop ... No drama though, as far as I remember, it’s a loud, rough, but somehow well-mannered crowd. I recall being in a pub at night, clumsily spilling 3 or 4 guys beers that were on a little shelf, by accident, expecting some scuffle but instead these blokes laughed and paid me & my friends a new round !

Never know who you’ll run into, for me that was Phil Read in a tea shop, it happened that my helmet that was a replica of his famous racing helmet .

Then you have (had ?) the Sunday, when the “ circuit” is open to anyone, guys who have been soaked in alcohol and dreams of speed all week get on their crotch rocket and pretend to know what they’re doing ... it’s awful.

If you have the opportunity to jump/hide in that 7X and fly to the IOM, do it !

My first trip to Italy was with an organized group, ASIC or something like that, but I think their trips are geared towards students as I went as part of my high school Latin club. But an organized trip can be good. I have a coworker who’s done several REI trips and loves it. My aunt does a lot of group travel, but not with REI, but she also generally enjoys it.

Another option to consider might be something like a Rhine river cruise - you’ve got the boat as kind of a central hub, the crew on there is going to speak english so it’s not like being dropped in the middle of a country where you don’t speak the langauge and nobody speaks yours. And you get to preview a few different countries which may inspire you to go back to one of them for a longer trip.

Also, my experience is that the world is pretty easy to get around these days, especially if you can get cell service or wi-fi for Google translate. Of course it’s easier if you’re in larger cities.  We went to some boonies in Thailand and I was very glad we had a guide.

It was about a s bad as you could imagine. Being from western Maryland and used to snow, it was kind of funny to me, other than I didn’t want anyone to get hurt/killed.

Last year I spent in   Thailand. I think we were in Phuket at the time, but we also went to Chiang Mai, spent a day in Bangkok, and even went to a border town on Loas for a bit . The year before that we were in Budapest, Hungary after spending a few days at my sister’s place in Stuttgart, Germany.

I can highly recommend all 3 places, Stuttgart being especially great if you’re into cars since it’s home to Porsche and Mercedes. Thailand is also awesome, it’s really cheap, and probably would have been about 1000x more fun (and more trouble) if I was single. But it was still great.  Budapest was also amazing, great food, interesting people, an a lot of history.

Yeah, I got a letter about a month after I applied saying that I had been randomly selected to provide more information. Enclosed with that letter was a packet of forms that more or less asked me for my life story from birth to that day. They wanted the address of every place I had ever lived, every school I had ever attended, every place I had ever worked and the name of my supervisor there, copies of 3 current IDs, copies of 5 expired IDs (who the fuck has 5 expired IDs laying around?), Etc, etc, etc.

The thing is, the forms were so badly xeroxed, like they were a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy, that I thought it was a scam. Had that information fallen into the wrong hands, I’d be completely screwed. I’d never get my ID back. I almost called the cops, but decided to just throw the packet out.

Two months later I got a second letter from the State Department telling me that they had asked for more information, but I hadn’t provided it. They sent me my photo back and invited me to try applying again in the future.

I'm scared that I'm flagged on some sort of list now.

I’ll only be in the Dells for about a day and a half. My wife’s side has a summer house there and she’ll be there for a month- I’m swinging by to pick her and my kids up and heading back to Minnesota to spend some time with my dad on the family farm. I love the Dells, but I never stay long because I can’t wait to get back home when I’m that close!

Yowzers... That sounds more like a background investigation for a security clearance than a passport application process. I probably would have reacted similarly.

Yeah, I’ve been a character witness for a couple of friends who got Top Security clearance. One of whom I called when I got that stuff, and he said the same thing. He also was positive that it was a scam, because the packet was stapled together and, “The Federal Government does not use staples.”

I dunno, he’s a Major in the Army now.  Maybe the military doesn’t use staples, but the State Department apparently uses staples and the worlds worst xerox machine.

The military doesn't use staples... There are staplers all over the place and every single one of those MFers is empty and no one knows where to get refills...
